Lokahi (Unity)

(for my Kerouac friend keeping me On The Road…)

Maui…

A simple stone paved trail,

east to west, west to east,

4 to 6 ft

An ancient circle around,

And just inside the blue’s lapping edge

Stones set above raw anger of lava

Where Pele chases Kamapuaÿa to the sea

Cooling the way to stone, bridge our differences,

in black lava rock.

The King’s Trail,

Pi’ilani’s unity gift,

then with lush elephant ears of greens

Now with thin wispy rainbows painted on light eucalyptus bark,

7 miles in on the road…

Invasive wildfires of Chinese bamboo, securing the soft soils from going to sea

Leading to Black soft warm sands

Pi’ilani  did you hear the black rocks grind-talking on your unity walks,

as they forgivingly made their compromising mix of sands?

Unifying laid flat stones, circling,

Worn down during meeting walks,

Unifying Stepping stones,

Bringing cliff top to  Kainalimu Bay

A serendipitous glance to the ocean’s north

To see a breach,

Humpback circle in the air to his back,

Landing splash,

Trade winds pressing my onlooking face,

pressing the cotton cloud wisps well upward above,

to Haleakala’s lap,

dotted with the grey Ahinahina,

A dry desert, in sunrise’s red-orange clouds…

I say to myself, “So everything immigrated here,

and became one, in this blue-green circle”

We are all walking on a portion of the King’s Trail,

      on the road to Hana.

We all immigrated to our places…

Making our unique mark, our invasiveness, to the pure surrounding mix of life,

Some of us from east facing west, some west facing east,

We all leave pieces of ourselves, our marks,

So, make it a good mark to leave…

Together…

Lokahi.
